I saw the following video today — it is Brendan O’Neill giving evidence to a parliamentary committee on same-sex marriage. He makes clear he is a libertarian, and that “gay marriage” is authoritarian and a form of state intervention that he opposes. His arguments make mincemeat of the politicians. Watching this, I could hardly believe he was not the MP, and the people questioning him were our representatives in Parliament. Good Lord!

Wow. I’ve read quite a bit of stuff by O’Neill. Usually he’s not a fucking moron. He also usually tells people who whine about what other people say to grow the hell up, instead of whining that it’s “authoritarian” that one might be called a “bigot.”
There was no widespread government marriage in England and Wales till the Births, Marriages and Deaths (Registration) Act of 1836. We got on for a thousand years or more without government marriage – so I do not see the point of it now. Leave it to the Churches and other such (including Humanist Associations).
One does not even need to ask such questions as “In a homosexual marriage who is the husband and who is the wife?” as the whole matter of marriage should not be the business of government.
“We just want tolerance” was the claim – but that has turned out to be a LIE.
The “anti discrimination” lawyers are out in force – as are the homosexual “activists”.
Demanding that every private business owner “recognise their unions” – OR ELSE.
This is nothing to do with tolerating private ceremonies where a homosexual couple and their friends get together.
This is about using the power of THE STATE.
Excellent find DJ.
Top marks for finding that, DJ .
O’Neill is certainly an odd one.
Funny to think that he was in the Revolutionary Communist Party.
He is spot on about the state redefining what marriage is.
There is nothing wrong with individuals having different notions of marriage but it should not be the job of the state to clarify what a ‘proper’ marriage is.
Nonsense. It is the job (well, one of the jobs) of the State to tell us what everything is.
I mean, otherwise, how would you know?
O’Neill is not a libertarian; he still identifies as a Marxist. A consistent Marxist would, of course, oppose gay marriage because he wants marriage in its entirety to be abolished. Indeed, culturally, the Marxist would see gay marriage as the imposition of โheteronormativityโ onto homosexuals. Gay Liberation activists as recently as the 1980s would have been disgusted by gay marriage, preferring instead to construct a revolutionary, new blueprint designed for the queer community that does not pay lip service to the patriarchal values of monogamy and marriage.
