In the 1950s, we had at my school a couple of South-Indian boys whose surname was Rajaratnam. They were really quite a deep shade of, I’d say, dark brown, being almost Tamils (I can’t remember.) they’d get asked from time to time by newbugs who didn’t know them “Er, Rararatnam, why are you so black?” Either would answer “because I come from somewhere hot”. “Er OK, that’s interesting”. And that, for us, was really the end of the matter, and they didn’t give a stuff either.
Indeed, as I notice it, they looked not unlike the little black fella in the photo above.
Furthermore, as it too too long to pronounce their name, specially on the football field in the freezing rain, they got nicknamed “Ratbag”. This was much quicker to shout, and they didn’t mind, and nobody knew what a ratbag was anyway, and it was simple and short. You can picture it on the pitch@ “HERE! RATBAG, RATBAG…RATBAG…!!!! TO ME! TO ME! NOW!” Or…RATBAG I’m passing to YOU!” I think they went on to become doctors, after both getting into Westminster. Or at least one did.
I got nicknamed “Uri” after the Dickens character Uriah Heep. The English-master didn’t like me much at that particular time, and cast me as Uriah Heep once when we read aloud the dialogue by parts of the story in class, as various boys. Apparently I did it so well that the rest of the class decided that was my name from then on. Unfortunately it got stuck. Perhaps I should sue the Estates of that teacher’s heirs and successors, for “being offended and humiliated and “made to feel physically sick…?”
If anything, it may just as easily be construed as being ‘racist’ against white people – as in, making out that they are so stupid that they think they can scrub somebody into being a different race.
However, I suspect that my (albeit feigned) outrage over this sleight against white people would never be taken seriously……but surely it is equally absurd as any other complaint over what is clearly a pictorial comedy piece about the futility of an action.
Everything that even touches on race, religion, homosexuality, etc are instant hot-potato matters, irrespective of there being any real logic there any more.
The fake nature of outrage is what makes it so annoying: it is designed merely to gain political power for the campaigning organisations and to neuter opposition.
You are quite right. I think Paul Gottfried describes it as surrogate crimes against surrogate victims.
