The betrayal of Dr David Kelly, 10 years on

A powerful statement by Andrew Gilligan, who was at the time at the centre of the ‘dodgy dossier’ scandal. Now of course, 10 years, hundreds of thousands of lives and countless billions of fiat currency money later, we are allowed to hear some truth.

Here are some gems from the piece:

What we now know is that on September 17 and 18 2002, a week before the dossier was published, Alastair Campbell sent memos to its author, Sir John Scarlett, saying that he and Tony Blair were โ€œworriedโ€ that on Saddamโ€™s nuclear capability the dossier gave the (accurate) impression that โ€œthereโ€™s nothing much to worry aboutโ€.

No wonder a little tipping of the scales was needed โ€“ or, as Blair also put it in his book, โ€œpoliticians are obliged from time to time to conceal the full truth, to bend it and even distort it, where the interests of the bigger strategic goal demand that it be doneโ€.

[What ‘strategic goal’ might that be, I wonder.]

An explanation, if not an excuse, may rest in Campbellโ€™s mental state: even Blair, in his memoirs, called him a โ€œcrazy personโ€ who by that stage โ€œhad probably gone over the edgeโ€. But that doesnโ€™t explain the really scary part: how the machinery of government, in a mature democracy such as Britainโ€™s, allowed itself to be captured by someone in that state.

[Why does that sentence make me suddenly think of Germany 1933?]

  1. I’m one of those who do not believe Kelly committed suicide. I know conspiracy theorists are stopped clocks who will occasionally be right… but this is crystal clear to me.

  2. I remember watching a report by Andrew Marr in 1983. This ended with the words: “We may never know who killed David Kelley.” He then gave an alarmed look at the enormity of what he’d let slip, and his report ended. I asked my wife if I’d made a mistake. She confirmed those were his words.

  3. I don’t think it’s objectively very important whether Kelly was actually killed by *someone* or ‘only’ committed suicide. He was killed by ‘the system’ no matter who, what or how.
More important IMHO are the facts relating to this case coming out now confirming the slide into fascism we are all on whether we like it or not.
