I chanced upon this stuff in Tim Worstall’s excellent place. Never having heard of Mike Daisey (and I don’t supposed he’s invented anything earth-shattering or I’d have noticed) I read what this was about. It seems it’s evil and wicked to buy things made by poor people in order to help them to gradually become richer.
Well, I guess I’m the queen of Romania. Daisey seems to be complaining mostly about the “working conditions” of these 3rd-world (I don’t think China’s exactly 3rd world since the death of Marxism there) workers. Cultural changes take a longer time than economic ones, which is why we need lots of economic change, to accelerate cultural change. I believe the Chinese State still executes people for relatively minor crimes: is Daisey complaining about that, by any chance, or is that “local, ethnic or cultural values which differ from ours…”?
