Telephone Number Salaries in the Public Sector

David Webb

Dear all, as a conservative, I have no objection to people earning large salaries – AS LONG AS THEY DO IT IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR. I am not interested in trying to cut bankers’ bonuses or any of that sort of thing. But I am BITTERLY opposed to housing association chiefs earning £400,000 (plus expenses, plus pension). I am one of those “unbiddable” people who the political parties don’t even bother trying to appeal to nowadays – I will simply never vote for any party that allows this. Full stop.

I totally agree with the Libertarian Alliance of Sean Gabb that there should be a cap on public-sector pay. It would take some time to investigate all the public-sector salaries. They should all be adjusted – but in the meantime a 100% tax band on any money earned in the public sector over £50K is desperately needed. I have a self-invested pension (SIPP), but not nearly enough invested in it yet to rely on it for my retirement, and I am also BITTERLY opposed to having to pay into public-sector pensions via the council tax.

When I read that my council gets 84% of its money in the block grant from the central government, I realised that they wouldn’t need to levy any council tax at all if it were not for the pension contributions that make up 20% of the council’s spending. I would like to see all public-sector workers required to open their own SIPPs and pay 10% of their existing salaries into their SIPPs. That way public-sector pension contributions would be set at zero, and there would be no state-sector implicit pension debt. I simply will never, ever vote for any party that does not address these issues. Regards, DJW.
