Antal Dorati and Franz-Josef Haydn

Sean Gabb

I had to drive up to London yesterday, and then back. I listened to several of the Antal Dorati Haydn Symphonies. I agree with David Mellor that these are, in every respect, the best recordings. Roger Norrington and Sigiswald Kuijken may produce a sound that would not have been out of place in 1790s London/Vienna, but they don’t, in my opinion, bring out the full genius of Haydn.
