As of now you can’t get rid of them earlier unless the PM calls an election earlier. Fixed term parliaments at least stops a government from choosing the election date that most is most beneficial to it or is most disadvantageous to the opposition, which is why Gordon Brown will almost certainly not do it. Fixed terms combined with a means for citizens to trigger recall elections of at least MPs and perhaps the whole government might be the way to go.
