Even if he is not guilty of the offence for which he was obliged to step down, he should be required to resign for failing to capture the mood of the public. His political antenna is clearly compromised given he felt the best way to deal with the claims was to mount a spirited attack, rather than a defence which at least had the appearance of being contrite.
