If physicists are to be believed the quantum world is a bewilderingly odd place where the common-sense rationality of cause and effect holds no sway. Particles can be linked at potentially any distance (a state called entanglement) so that altering the state of one results in the same alteration in the other instantaneously. There is quantum tunnelling whereby a particle can move itself through an obstacle which it does not have the energy to move over or around (akin to something changing its nature to go through a brick wall rather than over it) and superposition of states where an entity such as an electron or atom can be in different states and positions at the same time.
Perhaps oddest to the human mind is the idea that an entity such as an electron or proton can exist simultaneously in two forms, as a wave and a particle and that when the entity is not observed it displays wave properties, but when measured (in this case measured meaning to be observed) then it immediately assumes its particle form, viz: .

This can be true for electrons at the submicron level, i.e., at distances measuring less than one micron, or one thousandth of a millimeter. When behaving as waves, they can simultaneously pass through several openings in a barrier and then meet again at the other side of the barrier. This โmeetingโ is known as interference.
Strange as it may sound, interference can only occur when no one is watching. Once an observer begins to watch the particles going through the openings, the picture changes dramatically: if a particle can be seen going through one opening, then itโs clear it didnโt go through another. In other words, when under observation, electrons are being โforcedโ to behave like particles and not like waves. Thus the mere act of observation affects the experimental findingsโ. Science Daily
This is as disorientating for physicists as for anyone else:
โNothing is real until it has been observed! This clearly needs thinking about. Are we really saying that in the โrealโ world โ outside of the laboratory โ that until a thing has been observed it doesnโt exist? This is precisely what the Copenhagen Interpretation is telling us about reality. This has caused some very well respected cosmologists (Stephen Hawking for one) to worry that this implies that there must actually be something โoutsideโ the universe to look at the universe as a whole and collapse its overall wave function. John Wheeler puts forward an argument that it is only the presence of conscious observers, in the form of ourselves, that has collapsed the wave function and made the universe exist. If we take this to be true, then the universe only exists because we are looking at it. As this is heading into very deep water I think we will have to leave it there and move on to the next experiment.โ Professor Keith Mayes, Professor of Information Security Royal Holloway College.
The idea that nothing is real unless it is observed is worrying enough, but it also raises the difficult question about who or what constitutes an observer. Is it only human beings who qualify or can any organism? Would a bacteria or even a virus qualify or would the observer have to have a degree of self-consciousness and intelligence, for example, say all the great apes plus humans?
It would be interesting to conduct the double split experiment โ in which a single electron is sent through two slits in a board at the same time when acting as a wave when unobserved but only through one slit whilst acting as a particle when observed โ with different organisms present but no humans.
The question of who or what counts as an observer has further difficulties. Suppose human beings are the only observers who activate reality or what we think of as reality. Human beings frequently suffer the loss of faculties such as sight and hearing. Does someone who is blind not act as a reality activating observer? Those who have lost a sense still have a solid idea of what they perceive to be the external world. Any sighted person can test the proposition by closing their eyes. They still experience what they believe to be reality through their other senses. Not only that, but if the sighted person has an object before them which they have seen before closing their eyes, very often they can touch it and recognise the shape of the object even if it is shifted to another position. It is also possible for a sighted person whose eyes are covered to correctly identify objects they have not seen using their other senses. Moreover, those who have lost sight will say that they experience the same type of sensory perception the sighted with closed eyes experience, although probably with a heightened non-visual perception.
There is also what might be termed the partial perception of something problem. We hear what we believe is a door banging but cannot see the door, a smell coming from a kitchen suggests bacon is frying although we cannot see inside the kitchen, we hear voices down a telephone. What exactly is being brought into existence here if we accept that nothing actually exists as we perceive it until we perceive it? Does the voice at the other end of a phone call actually exists or are we simply calling into being a personality by either answering a ringing phone or making a call?
But observation/measurement is not simply a question of organisms measuring according to physicists. They also tell us that if the observation/measurement is made by inorganic means such as a machine which detects particles without any human involvement the unobserved/measured wave still collapses into a particle.
Where does this leave us? If humans can experience reality without a full set of senses this implies one of three things: that the senses operate individually as a trigger to bring reality into existence within the limits of the senses operating at a given moment, that the existence of a human perceiving a situation is what counts regardless of how the perception is made or human minds are simply projectors of information from an external source in the same way that a video file plays in Realplayer or a reel of film plays on a screen. If nothing exists until we attempt to measure/observe it any of these scenarios is plausible.
To add to the intense intellectual discomfort which descriptions of and theories about the quantum world generates, physicists are far from agreeing how the quantum world operates, for example, there is disagreement over whether the wave function is a statistical tool or a physical reality and the no manโs land between the textbook quantum world (that is molecules, atoms and subatomic particles) and the arena of classic physics of Newton is undecided territory with no definite understood interaction and the way that quantum effects bleed over into the macro world which we experience with our senses. Nonetheless, there is a general acceptance by physicists that the quantum world does not play by the rules of Newtonian physics , even if the weirdness is given different interpretations.
To all that weirdness can be added the general strangeness of atoms being comprised almost entirely of empty space. The lay human mind naturally boggles at how atoms which have so little physical substance can produce objects which are so solid and real to the human senses.
A virtual reality universe
All this may seem to be utterly nonsensical to the human mind, but there is a rational and plausible explanation for what seems absurd from our own experience. Ask yourself what it is that humans have created which most resembles our perceived reality? The answer is beautifully simple, the virtual realities created by digital means whether they be games or simply experiential programmes.
Imagine an entity in a virtual reality generated by a very advanced form of artificial intelligence (AI) which possessed something similar to the consciousness and intelligence humans possess . Such an entity would be unaware that it was no more than a character created from energy living in a seeming reality which existed simply as a computer program. The character would be in exactly the same position as ourselves. Let us further imagine this artificial intelligence began to investigate the nature of the perceived realm in which they existed and performed the type of experiments humans perform to look at the sub-atomic world and found that when they looked beyond the perceived reality they discovered the machine code. Would that not be the equivalent of humans discovering the weirdness of the quantum world we exist in?
if we are in a created reality akin to human created artificial realities the AI generated self conscious entity in a computer generated and hosted world would only be activated as and when the purpose of the virtual world required the activation and the entityโs perception of its surroundings would only be necessary for when it was needed. Such an entity would have a sense of time passing , but all that would represent would not be time in an absolute sense of immutable duration. Rather it would merely be the totality of the experiences which the entity encountered. If these experiences were linked in seeming chronological order then the entity would have the experience of linear time as we do although all that would be experienced would be a series of existential episodes which would only be snapshots of reality. That is precisely what quantum mechanics suggests is happening in our perceived reality.
If a reality is created rather than arising without any creative agent bringing it into existence, any such reality must of necessity have the nature of an artificial construct when viewed from outside. The relationship between the creator and the created reality will always be the same, in general terms, as that of the virtual reality created by humans.
It could be that by seeing beyond the Newtonian world of common-sense cause and effect, what humans are seeing is the equivalent of machine code for the reality we live in and that the explanation for the reality we perceive is that we are part of a computer generated virtual reality or something similar. If that is accepted the quantum world becomes far less absurd and mysterious. For example, entanglement does not pose of problem because if we are part of a computer simulation anything can be achieved. All we have to do is believe that it is real. Billions of galaxies with countless stars and unimaginable distances between them become only figments of perception rather than realities. If we are living in the equivalent of a computer programme then space as we perceive it would merely be a projected illusion on to our consciousness. Our different senses of the rate at which time passes could be simply the consequence of the computer program we are operating at different rates of event perception. Indeed, anything can be explained if it accepted that we are existing in something similar to a computer generated world. Just as humans can create fantastical computer generated worlds which break all the laws of Nature, so could our reality contain whatever a creator wished.
Even at the level of our perception of the universe about us there are some distinct oddities. Take the question of the possibility of life, and especially intelligent life, existing somewhere else in the universe. Despite the fact that that there are unimaginably immense, possibly infinite, numbers of galaxies in what we perceive as our universe, we have absolutely no meaningful evidence of any sort of life existing anywhere but Earth. Our natural inclination is to think that there must be life elsewhere because of the seemingly colossal opportunities for it to exist. But if that is the case why have no intelligent aliens been encountered either though their intrusion into our solar system or through messages sent remotely? There is a plausible argument that the reason is because the age of the universe is so immense that it would be most improbable that any alien visitor would coincide with the minute period humans have existed who could have recorded the visit. But if the universe is so vast, even infinite, the opportunities for such an encounter would be fantastically large or even infinite. Looked at from that viewpoint the absence of any other life in the universe showing themselves to us or simply being found seems improbable.
Infinity is the trickiest of intellectual constructs because once infinity is brought into the picture all concepts of number, size, density, duration or any other measurable quality become irrelevant. Claims that there are different size infinities, for example, an infinite series of ones is smaller in total than an infinite series of twos or an infinite number of rooms ten feet square is larger in floor area than a infinite number of rooms five feet square simply misunderstand what infinity is. What infinity does do is make anything possible although the probability of possibilities will vary tremendously.
Created and uncreated worlds
If our world is the product of a creator we are not that much further forward to what is our ultimate existential cause because the question of who created our creator and who created the creatorโs creator and so on in an infinite vicious regression with no ultimate answer. But what of the alternative explanation for our existence that our perceived reality simply came in existence? There is no means of proving that this is what happened because there could be no evidence that our reality had occurred without any conscious creator which would not be defeated by the question , yes, that happened but what caused it to happen? It would be impossible even in principle to show that any event or phenomenon was without a first cause.
Why would anything exist if there is no creator ? I suggest this. There are an infinite number of chances that something might exists and only a single chance that nothing might exist. Perhaps there is existence simply because Nature abhors a vacuum.
What could be the motives of those who create realities if in fact they are created? It could be :
- a simulation to test an hypothesis.
- an experiment, for example to see how human beings would evolve.
- a game, for example, to see who can get their player in the in the game to solve problem of why their perceived reality exists.
- An aesthetic creation akin to what we call art.
- Most undignified from the human point of view would be that we are simply an unintended consequence of the created reality which we inhabit like rust on a horseshoe.
Why would a creator make the structure of the quantum and classical physical worlds so different?
- Because that is simply the way things have to be if a human perceived reality.
- Because that is the most efficient way to produce a human perceived reality.
- Because it is the only way known to the creator to produce a human perceived reality.
- To hide the nature of the reality from human beings to make the working of the reality more efficient or more pleasing to the creator.
- Because to understand the quantum world would interfere with the function or purpose of the created reality.
- As a catalyst to increase the intelligence and understanding of the intelligences within the created reality either as an experiment or as a game, the end product of which is for humans to understand the quantum world.
- To disguise the nature of the creator.
Solipsism and dreams
It is possible that everything we think we are experiencing is simply a product of our minds with nothing existing outside our mind.
Humans, either individually or collectively could be the product of anotherโs beingโs mind, either consciously or in a dreaming state.
Is there anything definite we can say about existence?
I can think of only two things which are certain:
- any dynamic universe, that is a universe which experiences change, has of necessity the nature of a machine and everything thing in it, whether animate or inanimate, must share that nature. That does not mean it must be run on a basis of linear cause and effect, merely that it experiences change. Nor does it mean that the mechanical nature of a dynamic universe is predictable. Machine-like behaviour operates at the quantum level even if it is probalistic rather than certain. Moreover, even in the macro world we experience , our definition of a machine no longer includes a predetermined result because computer programs, especially those using AI, do not give a certain result.
- Free will is a logistical impossibility both because of the mechanical nature of dynamic universes and as a matter of simple logic. Imagine the most powerful possible being, an all powerful, all knowing creature such as the most awesome God of whom we can conceive. Such a being still does not have free will because any being exercising conscious choice must of necessity have a discrete mind and a mind must be limited by its own desires.

With all respect to Robert, I don’t believe a word of this stuff. Modern physics is the equivalent of modern art. Something has gone badly wrong at the level of basic assumptions, and the consequence is gibberish. It would help if there were unambiguous empirical proof. As it is, I suspect the proofs all amount to mutual backslapping.
Yes, but they are using ordinary language in non-ordinary sense.
For example – “observation” in the ordinary language sense suggests an entirely passive, non-interacting relationship.
This not how you “observe” things at the quantum level – the way you observe things at the quantum level is by striking particles together or striking them with protons or electrons etc..
There is no conflict between physics and common sense if you have the right philosophical outlook.
Sean – Some misunderstanding here. I am not saying modern physics is wholly or even partially correct. What I am doing is to say that if the underlying fabric of our perceived reality is as seemingly irrational as they say even if they squabble over the details, then our perceived reality can be explained as being in the same relationship to the underlying reality as we have to a computer generated human created virtual world.
JohnW – Not with the double split experiment where the observation/measurement by a human being or a mechanical recorder with the result in both cases being that an unwatched elector displays itself as a wave and an observed/measured electron as a particle. .
I think the idea that wavefunction collapse is caused by a conscious observer (i.e the classic Copenhagen Interpretation) is more a rule of thumb that ensures you get the right answer when performing calculations. Not many people would argue that this corresponds to an objectively real phenomenom. I believe quantum decoherence plus some form of many-worlds theory is a more popular interpretation these days. Decoherence rapidly causes the quantum superpositions to be isolated from each other in a macroscopic system. That still leaves the problem of which alternative becomes reality. Many-worlds theory simply says, they all do but we are not aware of them because they are isolated. Regardless, the interpretation is less important than the predictions.
Sean, I am surprised to hear such a blanket dismissal of ‘modern physics’, can you expand? String theory may well be a dead end, verging into the realms of mathematical navel gazing, but the Standard Model is going strong and is of immense predictive power. It’s major flaw would seem to be that aesthetically it is rather unsatisfying, and, it cannot be reconciled with General Relativity (which is the major motivation for string theory).

This is correct. I did address this with a link:, viz:

This is a wider problem in physics because physicists frequently say that something must be right because it fits with the Maths. This has the effect, intended or not, of placing physicists in the same position as priests who are the only ones with access to the sacred mysteries.
I suspect (and have always suspected with the “observer effects the observer” stuff – the idea that S. mocked with his idea of the cat that is neither alive or dead before the box is opened and the cat “observed”) that a very simple mistake is being made.
Not a complicated and mathematical mistake (the scientists would spot that), but a very crude mistake which is slipping under (not over – under) the great minds involved in these things – one involving their assumptions.
But I am too ignorant of the physical sciences to even guess what the simple mistake is – but I think it is there.
Oddly enough this puts me in a similar position to Sean Gabb – although our philosophy is poles apart. But it is a suspicion I have had since I studied physics as a child (indeed it is the reason I gave up physics – the general feeling that the conclusions [not just this one] did not make sense, for some simple reason that I was sadly too dull to find).
It would be dishonest to pretend to disagree with Sean on this – when I having much the same thoughts for about 35 years.
Remember we are not talking about the idea that shining a light (a stream of photons) or other energy, on something of very low mass moves it – so the “observer effects the observed” by shining a light (or other energy) at it in order to “see” it. It is much more messy than that.
As for the philosophical implications.
Actually I doubt they are as profound as many people think.
For example, Epicurus (and others in his tradition) tried to explain free will (human personhood, the capacity for real choice, agency – the existence of the agent, the “I”) with the random “swerve of the atom”, however as Ralph Cudworth pointed out almost two thousand years later, freedom is not randomness. Freedom (agency) is itself – it can not be reduced (reductionism) to either predetermined ness or to randomness. Also the effort to “chop up” the mind into such things as “will” and “reason”, may also be a terrible mistake.
Still back to this…
Of course randomness exists – the physical universe is not fully deterministic (one does NOT need the “weird stuff” to know that), but randomness is NOT agency, it is not real choice (neither is it predetermined – agency is itself, and nothing else).
“Q.M. libertarians” – i.e. people who try and explain personhood (the reasoning “I” – free will) in terms of quantum mechanics, seem to be making a similar mistake, to the one Epicurus made (confusing real choice, the capacity to choose to do other than we do, with randomness).
All efforts to “explain” the fundamental fact of our own existence (the existence of the “I”) are fundamentally mistaken – often (although not always) attempts to “explain away” our existence (the existence of the “I” – the agent, agency).
Of course as “the Commentator” (Alexander of Aphrodisias) on Aristotle reminded us – the existence of “the soul” does not prove it is immortal (indeed “the Commentator” believed that it is not) – i.e. agency (the self) exists, but it may die with the body.
Things that don’t make sense often are nonsense.
Well, Sean, it all depends on what is defined as nonsense. The weirdness of the quantum world does not mean it is not a conceivable system. It plays by its own rules but they are still rules. The collapse of the wave function is a perfectly understandable and coherent idea if it is allowed that that is how the quantum world works. In its own way it is even a form of cause and effect, the wave is observed and collapses to a particle. Everything about the weirdness can also be explained if our perceived reality is in fact no more than the equivalent of a human created virtual world.
Nonsense when applied to facts rather than logic is essentially the impossible. However unsettling the quantum world is it is not in principle impossible.
Nothing that does not involve a contradiction is impossible. But the more unlikely a claim, the stronger needs to be the evidence for it. So far as I can tell, modern physics is a superstructure resting on a base of very tenuous fact. It is, for example, hard to establish that the speed of light is constant – indeed, some quasars – assuming they exist – are said to be moving away from us at more than the speed of light. The existence of black holes has not been definitely established. No one has ever seen dark matter, which itself has been conjectured into existence to make up for deficiencies in earlier conjectures.
I say again, modern physics is the counterpart of modern art and Keynesian economics.
Sean – I find the more I read myself into quantum physics more rational it becomes in the sense that I can see it is a coherent physical system.(I have recently finished reading a book Life on the Edge which deals with quantum behaviour within organisms. More than any other book on the quantum world I have read this explains clearly for the layman both quantum physics in general and its fascinating role in the Natural; World. Well worth a read). The fact that it seems more and more like a coherent system makes it seem less and less alien. I wonder if any other of the LAF Blog readers have found the same thing.
Modern physics cannot be compared to modern art and Keynsian economics because, whether or not a person accepts or rejects them as valid works of art or accurate economic theory the entirety of what they are is known because they exist in our own perceived reality and can be tested by each individual’s aesthetic judgement in the case of art or political/economic/sociological,/psychological leanings in the case of Keynsianism. There is no dispute that these things exist. There is dispute, and much of it, about the quantum world.
For myself I never say it is not art when confronted with the likes of Tracey Emin’s unmade bed or Marcel Duchamp’s urinal exhibited as sculpture (Fountain 1917) because I can understand it is the artistic impulse which has led them to create these works. What I do say is that it is poor art,
because of its technical deficiencies but mostly because it says nothing of importance.Most of it does not even serve the purpose of beautiful decoration.
As for Keynesianism, what passes for it, like what passes for the intellectual descendants of Adam Smith, has precious little to do with what Keynes advocated. Keynes was cautious. He advocated state pump priming only when sufficient time had passed to suggest that the trade cycle would not right itself naturally. In addition, he advocated the paying down of government debt during the good times when there was a surplus. Those who have claimed to be Keynsians have neglected to pay down debt in the good times and have reached for the state funding lever too rapidly in the bad times.
But quantum mechanics makes sense in many ways. It has empirical backing, it provides predictions which can be tested. It is coherent. It is one of the most astounding successes of physics.
It has also given us the technological advances of the last 60 or so years.
The interpretations of the mathematics may not make sense, but that is a different issue. The Copenhagen Interpretation isn’t held to by many today, at least not in its pure form.
Yes Sean – but highly intellectual nonsense, real high level stuff. Which is why I am not qualified to deal with the matter – I am just not smart enough to explain (or even see) the simple mistake that is being made (although I am sure there is one). I was not when I was young – and I am certainly not these days (too much bad living, and too many blows over the head in various parts of the world).
People just do not seem to see how strong Schrodinger’s objection was and is (they treat it as an amusing thought experiment – nothing more). The cat is either alive or dead – the particle was either emitted, setting off the machine that killed the cat, or it was not emitted. And this is all true BEFORE the box is opened – and anyone has seen the cat.
Otherwise we are indeed (as Mr Henderson implies) back to Bishop Berkley – with his doctrine that the physical universe had no independent existence, that everything depended on consciousness – either of man or God.
Determinism (in the sense of predetermination of everything) is I believe a fundamental mistake (we differ on this point), but so is Idealism.
Consciousness does exist – the “I” exists, we can do other than we de.
But it is NOT everything – we are not clockwork mice, but clockwork mice do exist (and they are still there when we are not looking at them).
The early 20th century Oxford Realists (Harold Prichard, Sir William David Ross and so on) struggled against both – against the view that consciousness did not exist (that agency, the “I”, was some sort of “illusion”) and against the view that consciousness was everything – that the material universe did not “really” exist.
And I believe they were right to struggle against both.
As for physics – the “weirdness” did not start with QM.
Take Einstein.
According to his theories if two objects are heading towards each other each at three quarters of the speed of light (0.75 of “C” each) their combined speed (their “smashing together” speed) is NOT one and half times the speed of light (1.5 of “C”), He will sacrifice everything (time, space, rationality – everything) rather than say that their combined speed (the speed they smash into each other at) is greater than “C”.
And, like most things in modern physics, it goes back to Maxwell.
According the mathematics of Maxwell (that revenge of Plato and Pythagoras over Aristotle [see “The Cave and the Light” by Arthur Herman] AND over ANTI Aristotelian Common Sense men and women of science as well) if……
If a beam of light is fired off and one person chases after it and the person next to the them does not, the beam of light gets away from both people AT THE SAME RIGHT.
I, like the fat lump I am, do nothing – and you chase after the beam of light in a sports car, or a rocket ship.
And the beam of light gets away from both of us AT THE SAME RATE.
Ironically the last physicist whose work seems to make sense from the point of view of mere humans is the non mathematical (and highly religious – although that did not effect his work) Michael Faraday (1791-1867).
The test of people like Prichard and Ross in philosophy – “if a reasonably intelligent person walked into this lecture theatre from the street, would what I am saying make sense to them – if not it is me who has failed, not them” works with physics also up to and including the time of Faraday.
After Maxwell (i.e. even before Einstein – let alone QM) it collapses with physics.
It would not make sense to that reasonably-intelligent-person that if one fires off a beam off light and chases after it, it gets away AT THE SAME RATE than if one does not chase after it.
Of course (the physicist replies) why should the universe “make sense” in terms of that common paltry thing – human reason.
Fair enough, but as I am human, I decided (at the age of 16) to turn away from something that was not, it seems, meant for humans.
The alternative is to treat it all as mathematics – but that, to me, is not satisfactory either.
The whole thing reminds me of the later stages of the Ptolemaic theory, which, I believe, began to work rather well once enough epicycles had been conjectured into it.
Sean – It is quite true that physicists depend too much on the god of the gaps, dark matter being a good example. but there is much in the subatomic world which it is reasonable to take as fact, for example, atoms, molecules, electrons, photons, neutrons and protons. Physicists are not building on non-existent foundations.
I have no reasonable doubt that matter is made of atoms. It’s most of the more recent stuff I find suspect.

Einstein says that no discrete object exceeds the speed of light. The combined speed of crashing bodies does not fall into that category.

That I would wholeheartedly agree with. Faraday had no more than basic arithmetic so was forced to explain in ways that anyone of normal intelligence can understand. RH
I would like to suggest interested readers read Owen Barfield. He was C.S. Lewis’ best friend. While some of his positions may seem a bit unorthodox, he did an excellent job of arguing his case. This is a classic.

World’s Apart is an excellent dialogue showing how different scientific disciplines in the 1960s had a contrasting and contradictory assumptions. (Not very scientific in my opinion for fields to not be congruent.)
Owen Barfield was interested in the power of imagination and the nature of reality. From reading Human Action I noted that Mises said capital must basically be imagined.
