My Brother in law and his wife today went to see Senegal vs. Mexico football at the Olympics today. This got me thinking. They are neither Mexican or Senegalese. So why would you bother? Well you wouldn’t unless they were the only tickets randomly available on the “luck of the draw” system set up by Locog.
You see if you create a good enough myth that demand will outstrip supply then suckers will take what they can. And thus the stadiums all look nicely but ever so artificially filled up. If suckers hadn’t bought the tickets to any and every event despite their lack of interest then the seats would all be empty save for the few spectators from those nations at the events. That would be bad!
It seems the British teams are unsurprisingly well supported, even shooting which makes a change, but it seems too that the obscure teams are also performing in well filled stadia/stadiums. And I now wonder if this was the plan from day one. Create the illusion of scarcity and the sheeple will be happy with any crap tickets – after all they are just so lucky to get them and it’s a once in a life time thin! But at least the seats will be filled and the sheeple will spend their hard earned cash on coke and burgers. Given the furore last week over empty seats perhaps my cynicism might just be justified.
Or am I just imagining it?
